10 common French Grammar Mistakes

10 common French Grammar Mistakes you must be aware of !!!

French Grammar Mistakes

Isn’t it obvious that you can’t avoid mistakes while learning any new language and not just French? French is all about complicated grammar rules, few tough pronunciations and a huge list of word vocabularies. If you remain aware and quickly learn the grammar mistakes it will help you in staying away from the mistakes in the near future.

Here are few of the common French grammar mistakes which most of the students are seen to be making while learning French even if they know the rules

  • Improper use of definite articles

We have heard of the articles Le, la and les which are used while learning the French language. Rather the indefinite, as well as the partitive articles, are the default articles. It is important to understand that the usages of articles are absolutely different in French and English and this is the section where one needs to be extremely careful.

  • Problem of translation

Few literal translations can be hugely enticing such as you feel to express your interest in various activities, meeting new people and also your hobbies. You must keep in mind not to actually translate the complete phrase. You can say “Ça m’interesse” which means (that interests me).

  • Issue of Subject and Object

Suppose you want to say that you miss someone, then to express that make use of the verb “se manquér”. In case you want to say “I miss you”, then in French it would be “Tu me manques”.

  • Agreement issues

Always make correct use of the adjectives and make them in proper terms with the feminine or the plural terms. The adjective “amusant” will be amended to “amusante” in case of feminine singular and for the feminine plural it will become “amusantes”.

  • Use of prepositions

Do not forget to use correct preposition and always remember to include the appropriate article contraction wherever necessary. Ideally, it is said that the French prepositions are quite easy than the English prepositions because they are a handful in number in the French language.

  • The wise use of the Negative Articles

You can use “il n’y a pas de” instead of “il y a pas de”. At the time of using “de” or “de” and an article in the negative form, do not forget that French has huge expectations and it is one of those expectations.

  • Always use Conjugated Verbs

Always use the conjugated verbs as we all know that this is mostly done in the English language, but in French, it is done in a more elaborate manner.

  • Use of subjunctive verbs

The concept of subjunctive verb is one of the most difficult things in the French language. A lot of Anglophones are not even aware of the thing that it is even used at all. The primary step is to understand the concept and situation in which it is used, practice, and then observe and final step is to correct.

  • Confusion in greetings

Ideally, when you meet someone in the morning you say “Good morning”. The word greeting actually cannot be translated into French. In French, in order to greet someone, one must say “Bonjour”.

  • Problem in pronunciation

English words have more sounds than the French words do. There are many French words which are quite tough to learn. You will have to be careful in using some letters while trying to speak French words.
