Tautology is the repetitive uses of words in English that convey the same meaning. It is an important part of the figures of speech and it is, therefore, necessary to know its meaning.  The word originated from the Greek word “tauto” which means “the same” and “logos” meaning “a word or an idea.” Repeating the same sense in tautology, whereas repeating the same sound is tautophony.

Tautology is sometimes used intentionally especially in poetry to highlight an idea or maintain the line meter. In most cases, you will find tautology is being used because the speaker or writer is not confident or searching for vocabulary.

Let’s say you start your day by focusing on the most important task. Then which is first and foremost on your mind? The two words carry the same meaning and can be used interchangeably. It is tautology as the phrase is used for styling purposes.

• Either it is or it isn’t

This phrase is commonly used for requesting or clarifying something. Both of these convey the same actions and the use of is enough to understand the meaning. It can also be interpreted as a logical statement with significance for both.

• Close proximity

The word close proximity means the same thing. The word close means to stand at a short distance. Proximity also denotes closeness. This tautology points out the closeness of the thing.

• You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do

This phrase is quite common in the English language and signifies the unpleasantness of doing a thing which must be done. This kind of expressions is especially common in movies and television.

• Lonely isolation

Both words mean the same, ornate nothing and unnecessarily carry the burden of repetitive words. Lonely in itself can stand on its own like a lonely place or feeling lonely. Isolation also means the feeling of loneliness after being physically or mentally separated.

This phrase repeats the same thing in a different manner. This is readily used by someone who doesn’t have a good grip over the English language or is unsure about supplying words to their thoughts.

There are times when tautology adds flair to your writing and flowers to your expressions. Tautology doesn’t ornate your writing to a greater degree and best to be left out. Sometimes, less doesn’t cost you more in speaking English correctly.
